Wrap Up
We have been home a while now and have all hit the ground running with catching up with various home duties. Hence it has taken a while to sign off on this blog. I thought it would be a nice idea to include here some of the information about our blog and the some of the documentation and paperwork from our trip as a record of what it all entailed.....
Linda started this blog before the trip as an introduction. Heidi then continued compiling and publishing the blog posts with the assistance of Tejal, Bill and Linda for content, during the trip, as she had brought a computer along with her. There were obvious delays in some of the posts due to time factors and due to lack of access to internet.
We ended up doing all our bookings for our trip through Jenn at Tailor Made Journeys. She did OK for us but was difficult to get on to at times and didn't always follow up on things for us. This was most likely because she was on part time there so wasn't always available when we needed assistance. All in all though - looking back on it it was a fabulous trip with very few hiccups.
This is a copy of our Final Itinerary.....

TRANSPORTATION IN PATAGONIA (ARGENTINA/CHILE)
Given that
Patagonia is a remote area, many of its roads may not be sealed and, depending
on weather and/or traffic, their surface can sometimes become rough. When travelling by land in this region you
should be aware that delays can occasionally occur as a result of tyre
punctures or, sometimes, cracked windscreens.

Day 22 Thursday 25 January 2024 El Chalten/Argentina
Accommodation: Posada Lunajuim (1 Twin and
1 Double Standard Room)
Meal Plan: Breakfast
Description:
Day at leisure for optional walks in the park. All necessary information and recommendations about where to hike are available at your lodge or you can discuss your options with the rangers at the national parks office. A wide variety of walks for all levels of fitness are available and most can be easily undertaken independently. A box lunch can be organised through your hotel or from one of the small bakeries or cafes on the main street.
Excursions might include short walks to various lookouts around the town or perhaps a full day trek to Cerro Torre base camp (De Agostini) at Laguna Torre, taking 6-8 hours and ascending to 200m - panoramic views of the peaks, lakes and glaciers make this a very scenic walk.
Alternatively, a more challenging trek - about 4-5 hours each way - can be made to the Fitz Roy massif base camp at Rio Blanco, continuing steeply uphill to the spectacular viewpoint at Laguna Los Tres for the closest view of the massive granite walls of Fitz Roy and the surrounding peaks.
Recommended Treks:
Torre (Tower) Lagoon
Leaving El Chalten, the start of the trail takes you through a lenga wood where red-capped woodpeckers and parakeets may be seen. Continue walking alongside “moraines”, masses of boulders and gravel made by the Torre (Tower) Glacier during the ice age, and through a small valley where the vegetation is mostly composed by 2m high lengas. After 2 hours, the trail borders Fitz Roy River where you may see ducks. After 3 hours trekking arrive at Padre De Agostini base camp on the moraine surrounding Torre (Tower) Lagoon. Be welcomed by imposing panoramic views of Mounts (Cerro) Torre, Egger, Standhart and Solo; Cordón de las Adelas (3 mountain peaks) and Glaciers Grande and Adela. Icebergs from Grande Glacier can often be seen floating on Torre Lagoon, which is the origin of the Fitz Roy River begins. Return to El Chalten along the same trail.
Mount Fitz Roy
From El Chalten, walk along
the road to Lago del Desierto before branching off to the left to follow the
trail to Poincenot camp. On the way
visit the beautiful Capri Lagoon, home to number of different duck species. It’s a short side-trip worth taking for the
view of Mount Fitz Roy reflected in it’s waters, framed by lenga woods. Returning to the main trail continue along
the trail that at times will take you through forests and across rivers, always
with the imposing Mount Fitz Roy in view urging you on. Once you reach Poincenot base camp (where
mountaineers stay whilst preparing to climb the peaks) you can choose to remain
beside Blanco River or continue up the moraine to Laguna de los Tres (Three
Lagoons) on a difficult, but worthwhile trail.
At the top reflected in the waters of Laguna de los Tres are the
stunning peaks of the Fitz Roy amphitheatre with Mount Fitz Roy and its Glacier
taking prime position. Nearby is the
beautiful turquoise water of Laguna Sucia feed by another glacier. Return to El Chalten along the same
track.
