17th January Winter and Peterman Island

Woke up at 4:30 to ensure that we were up early enough to witness traveling through Le Maire passage. Spent time at the bow and on the bridge whilst we progressed through the channel.

Breakfast at 7 am

At 8:30 we went through the bio-security cleansing process again and boarded the Zodiacs for a landing on Winter Island. To reach there we passed by the Ukrainian base. Vlad and Olga had already been taken over there to meet the people on the base and to see it.

We were with Cherese this time ...

Stalking... he didn't catch it by the way...

We were dropped off at the Historical Wordie House where we were able to go inside and see what life was like in one of the earlier British research stations. It was named after Ernest Shackleton’s chief scientist in his epic 1914. - 1917 expedition.

Photo for Dugald ...

Whilst there we climbed to the top of the hill with great views down into the bay where 2 yachts were moored and down into the bay towards the boat. We were treated to Weddell Seal singing

We then had a zodiac cruise on the way back to the boat where Cherise spoke about the plants of Antarctica and the moss.

Back to the boat for lunch...

... then quickly out for a landing at the Bay of Circumcision on Peterman Island to see Adelie penguins and walked up to a viewpoint, quietly passing penguins with chicks. Tejal, Bill and Heidi walked up to the viewpoint.

On the way to the landing, we were shown where P P  was engraved on the rock for the ship Pourquoi-Pas iv built in 1908 and sailed by Jean-Baptiste Charcot to Antarctica.

Back on board a quick shower then out on the bow to witness traversing back through the La Maire channel.

Drinks in the lounge before dinner. Linda had a whisky with thousands of years old ice.

Dessert tonight was a grainy strawberry ice cream ... we must have been tired and on a high from the fabulous day as we spent a while joking about what was the cause of the 'grainy/powdery texture'!

After dinner, we had a recap of today's events and a rundown of the next day's events.

And it started snowing during the recap!

Then straight to bed as we were all very tired from the morning's early start.
