15 January Antarctica Reached

Heidi got up early to go on the bridge Bill, Linda and Tejal went up a bit later.

Quite a few bird’s circling this morning providing some great photo opportunities

Cape Petrel

After breakfast we convened in the Lounge for various instructional talks and videos, as well as operational and IAATA Briefing’s.

We then went through a biosecurity check where we had to take all our gear that we would be wearing to be checked and signed off on. We signed 2 documents one regarding the biosecurity agreement and the other a medical care permit for Dr Andrees

Next went to lunch. Yet again a delicious feed.

After lunch we had some free time, Heidi went up on the deck again. This time we could see several icebergs and the South Shetland Islands

At 3pm we gathered in the lounge for a talk on whales.

A slight change on the board ...

After that there was little bit more time to go out on the bow to see more wildlife, and where we are heading, before having a rescheduled early dinner time.

Heidi spent quite a few hours out on deck with Vlad and Olga from Ukraine

The evening activities have need rescheduled because we have made such good time that we will be able to go out in the Zodiacs today.

Before going out each of us had to flip our number tag, which we had to flip back on returning

We were taken out in the Zodiacs after dinner to Robert Point on Robert Island. Our first landing where we landed on a pebbly beach and our first encounter with penguin colonies. We saw chin strap and gentoo penguins, elephant seals, baby penguins, a skua with a baby. We also witnessed a skua eating a penguin.

On returning we were getting ready for bed when we noticed an amazing sunset so rushed out onto the bow and stayed out there until it set

  1. Amazing! I am enjoying reading about your journey. On side note, apparently there is lot of solar activity going on…with high chance of auroral display. If it happens, I hope you all get to see a beautiful display 😊
