Jan 12 Part 2

A follow on from the previous post that we did as we were heading to the bus to be picked up and taken to our boat

On the way I managed to get a photo of Heidi in front of the port sign


Ushuaia end of the world - before heading further south than we have ever been before.


Very gusty weather so we filed off the bus to the gangway a few at a time

We surrendered our passports when we reached the top of the gangway


We then headed for our cabins where our bags were waiting for us - Linda, Bill and Heidi in cabin 300 - triple share, and Tejal and our new friend Anna in cabin 307





We spent a while in our cabin working out where the best place was to stow our gear.

At 5pm we all gathered in the lounge for briefings/introductions etc

We then went for a wander around the boat to check it out including a quick visit up to the bridge where we saw the port pilot

We also all had to participate in a life-saving drill, where we put on special yellow life jackets.

At 6:30 we were all welcomed by Captain June with drinks and met all of the guides.

We were still tied up in port when we went into the dining area for dinner



However, soon after that we were on our way.

We spent quite a while up on the foredeck catching glimpses of and taking photos of some of the birds before turning in for the night,

17th January Winter and Peterman Island

Woke up at 4:30 to ensure that we were up early enough to witness traveling through Le Maire passage. Spent time at the bow and on the bridge whilst we progressed through the channel. Orca! Feeding humpbacks Lemaire channel Blustery.  Breakfast at 7 am At 8:30 we went through the bio-security cleansing process again and boarded the Zodiacs for a landing on Winter Island. To reach there we passed by the Ukrainian base. Vlad and Olga had already been taken over there to meet the people on the base and to see it.  We were with Cherese this time ... We were dropped off at the Historical Wordie House where we were able to go inside and see what life was like in one of the earlier British research stations. 19 January Adios Antartida

Headed towards Deception Bay in the night with a bit of rock n rolling Linda felt a bit sick and didn’t go to breakfast. Bill brought tea and toast Linda went up to Bridge to stare out the front Others went to breakfast and then went up front to watch the entry through Neptune's Bellows into Deception Bay. Linda and Heidi put on their Scopolamine Patches in preparation for the Drake Passage. The ship went across the bay near to the old burnt-out Argentinian base (from an eruption and ash falling). We all alighted and went ashore via Zodiacs.  Some including Heidi and Tejal headed along the beach for a long walk/climb up a hill.  Others, including Bill and Linda went for a walk along the beach in the opposite direction. First of all checking out the warmth of the water below the volcanic gravel, having a closer look at the burnt out wrecks of the station, checking out the kelp. Came across a colony of cormorants. 15 January Antarctica Reached

Heidi got up early to go on the bridge Bill, Linda and Tejal went up a bit later. Quite a few bird’s circling this morning providing some great photo opportunities Cape Petrel After breakfast we convened in the Lounge for various instructional talks and videos, as well as operational and IAATA Briefing’s. We then went through a biosecurity check where we had to take all our gear that we would be wearing to be checked and signed off on. We signed 2 documents one regarding the biosecurity agreement and the other a medical care permit for Dr Andrees Next went to lunch. Yet again a delicious feed. After lunch we had some free time, Heidi went up on the deck again. This time we could see several icebergs and the South Shetland Islands At 3pm we gathered in the lounge for a talk on whales.
