Day 2 Santiago to Buenos Aires

We had to check out of the Holiday Inn at the Santiago Airport at the same time Breakfast was served (5:00) to be able to check in 3 hours before our flight. We quickly grabbed a little bit of food and drink and headed across to the international airport.

We were surprised to find that we didn’t need to ditch our water before going through security for this flight.

And then seeing the huge flat expanse of Buenos Aires ...


We were met at the airport by Laura (our travel agent had arranged transfers from most of our flights) who then took us to the hotel and told us a little about BA on the short trip (advising us where not to walk at night). Flying past the sites Linda grabbed this shot from the minivan of the Slums of BA.


We were unable to get an early check-in so left our bags at the hotel – NH Florida – and went in search of lunch. We decided on La Barra as it was half a block from our accommodation. Heidi and Bill had a local Larger – Quimles, Mum (reminiscing on our trip to Peru) and Tejal had a Pisco Sour then Tortillas, and a very ordinary Pizza but good service.


Conveniently there was a Hop on Hop Off bus stop right beside the restaurant which we had decided to do as the tickets were valid for 24 hours and for $50  we thought it well worth the cost as we were quite tired from the travel over the last 2 days and lack of sleep. It was a great overview of Buenos Aires seeing as we only had 1.5 days there.




It was a sunny hot day so sitting in the shade for the afternoon soaking in the sights was a welcome reprieve. 





The varied architecture and murals meant we took too many photos to put them all here!









We jumped off at the Obelisk ...










... and walked down Florida with spruikers calling Cambio all the way.

We finished off the day at Maximilian which we had seen at lunchtime on our way past with Police and their cars surrounding it. Apparently, President Javier Milei had just moved out – he had been living there for 3 weeks.

We enjoyed the lights on the way home from dinner.




And collapsed exhausted into bed.

    Sorry, comment was by Rose/Ian who have enjoyed both your flight and your day sightseeing on your doubledecker - what a great idea. Armchair travel isn't the same, but thanks to you better than do travel at all overseas.

13 Jan First full day on the Polar Pioneer

Each night Martin would write on the whiteboard - which was conveniently outside our room - a schedule of the next morning. This was what he had written before hearing the news ... When we got up we noticed that the boat wasn’t moving. We soon found out why. One of the engines wasn’t functioning. After breakfast we gathered in the lounge for a briefing. A very serious briefing, explaining that we could not proceed with our journey due to the engine fault. There were not many dry eyes amongst us but everyone was accepting and remained stoic. From then on for most of the rest of the day we spent trying to work out what to do next, checking our insurance cover, deciding if we could pick up a berth on another vessel going to Antartica and wandering aimlessly around the boat trying to come to terms with what we had just heard. Day 3 Full Day exploring Buenos Aires

Slept in! We started the day with a relaxing yummy healthy breakfast in the hotel, and planned our day. We walked back to the bus (stop 11) – the day was cloudy and storms were forecast. Heidi had 'met' a Solo Female Travel blogger (online via an Antarctica Facebook group) https://thesanetravel.com/ who wrote - 12 things to do in Buenos Aires and so we chose to find the points that interested us - most of them. We travelled back the same way as yesterday so that we could get off at stop 14 to see the Floralis Generica. We walked through Parque Thays to admire the sculptures – one of them being Torso Masculino by Fernando Botero. We were attacked by mosquitos so had to move quickly before we were carried away. The park was near the slums so we were able to see their colourful homes before continuing our way to explore the area around the Centro de Convenciones (which for some strange reason had Kangaroo Sculptures in front of it).
