30th January - Last Day in Torres Del Paine - The Long Walk around Rio Serrano
We had decided not to take on any activities with the organization today or any tours, as it was debatable what the weather was going to be like. It in fact rained during the night and was drizzling a bit in the morning, because nothing was planned. We had a bit of a sleep, however Heidi and Tejal did not. They went ahead and finished breakfast before Linda and Bill even got there. Caught up with a bit of blogging and emails before deciding what we were going to do for the morning. We checked with Josepher what the weather was going to be like and she said it would be fine so we decided to go on the walk along the edge of the Rio Serrano to the confluence of that river and the Rio Grey. A very pleasant amble, stopping every now and again to take photos of the environment, the trees, the birds, etc
The river was the calmest we had seen it with low wind at the start of the day. We found this hole dug near the river and when we got back at the end of the day Josepher let us know that it was likely a skunk hole.
Calafate 'tree' with a fungus that seemed to be on a handful of bushes.
I say tree as this is the first that we had noticed was taller than us.
Including images of the birds that we had seen as we were able to ask Josepher about the birds later when we got back and she showed us each of them in a book that she had.
When we reached the confluence, we walked a little further to an inlet before then heading back via the forest. Unfortunately, we didn’t follow the path as shown on AllTrails. We thought we were taking a shortcut however it probably took us longer because of the rough and sometimes damp ground that we ended up walking through.
At the end of our walk, we decided to go and have a drink and perhaps something to eat at Pampa Lodge however they didn’t do lunch and the bar wasn’t open but a very kind lady at the desk offered to get us some drinks so we sat in the lounge, looking out at the magnificent view with our drinks And we met a couple from London, Jackie and Geoff who we chatted to for quite some time and found out that they had met Liz And Lewis the day before.
Back at our hotel, we sat in the lounge for a while catching up on the internet.
Scott had given us a bottle of wine the day before so we decided to drink it in our room before we went to dinner.
We also bought a bottle of local wine to have with our dinner.
After dinner, we settled our account at the desk as we would be leaving early the next morning. Whilst there the manager of the hotel came out to chat to us. We told her how impressed we were with the food, especially the fresh salad and vegetables. She told us then that they grow all their own in a large building at the back of the property. She also told us that they harvest all their own Calafete and also make their own Calafete liquor. She then gave each of us a shot glass of it to try.
A nice nightcap
